Even when I don’t know what I want to draw, simply taking my sketchbook outside often sparks new ideas and helps me reconnect with the joy of creating.

One of my favourite ways to overcome creative blocks is by using drawing prompts. Prompts give us a place to begin without telling us exactly what to create.

A simple idea like “Where the Butterflies Gather” or “The Garden After Rain” can lead to a realistic sketch, a colourful mixed media page, a collection of doodles, or something completely unexpected. There is no right or wrong way to interpret a prompt, which makes them a wonderful tool for creative exploration.

When using prompts, try not to focus on creating a finished masterpiece. Instead, use them as an invitation to play, experiment, and fill the pages of your sketchbook. Follow your curiosity, try new colours, make interesting marks, and allow yourself to work loosely. Some of the most meaningful pages are often the ones that begin without a plan and evolve naturally as you create.
