Creative flow begins the moment we stop trying to control the outcome and simply let the art lead the way.
Join me on a 5 day tiny sketchbook challenge.
There’s something powerful about working small. A tiny sketchbook removes the pressure to create something perfect and instead invites curiosity, play, and experimentation. For this week’s Creative Flow, I’m sharing a 5 Day Tiny Sketches Challenge (on YouTube) using a Field Notes sized sketchbook.
UNLOCK YOUR CREATIVITY – Big Changes with Small Drawings
The idea is simple: fill a small sketchbook with quick sketches over five days. No overthinking, no perfection, just letting creativity flow. Mistakes are going to happen but this is where you can let them go and use it as a way to learn and grow in your art.
I am making lots of mistakes but there is something about doing small sketches or artwork in a tiny little book that helps me just shrug my shoulders and turn the page. Onto the next drawing! But sometimes I will go back and realize there were no mistakes at all, who says it is a mistake anyway? I am learning to let self judgement go.
CHOOSE A THEME & Explore with Freedom
For my challenge, I chose the theme faces. Faces are endlessly expressive and each one offers an opportunity to explore emotion, shape, line, and personality. Some are realistic, some are abstract, and others emerge organically as the page develops.
Working in a tiny format keeps things loose and approachable. Each page becomes a space to experiment with different art supplies and techniques. In the video, I use a variety of materials and allow the process to guide the piece rather than following a strict plan. Lines overlap, colours layer, and each face evolves naturally as I work.
This challenge is about embracing intuition and creative freedom. The goal isn’t to create a masterpiece on every page, but to show up, explore, and see what happens when you give yourself permission to simply create.
ART SUPPLIES – Time to Experiment
I am playing with art supplies including:
Coloured Pencils
Ink
Acrylic Markers
Ball Point Pen
